A blog about tablet weaving and how to design your own belts.

Midnight Blue weaving

The silver-blue belt in silk and wool is finished. I really love the feel and look of it. The wool is matte and the silk shiny, which means that the two quite similar shades of dark blue appear quite different and contrasting. Here are some pictures:

Lady Midnight – Silk and wool

I really enjoy working on this belt in wool and silk. The silver and blue are pure silk and the dark blue (accompanying thread) is 100% wool. I was worried that they would stretch differently, but it works out great. So a sneak preview!

More to come later…

I finally finished the silk belt.

The photos don’t do it justice, but the yellow really looks like gold. It is the longest weave I have done so far, over 3m. It was a custom piece for a good friend. Unfortunately we could not meet in person, since I have been down with Covid/flu/nasty cold for the last weeks.

Anyway some photos below (I added some designs to the design page for 24 cards.

I got a request for the dragon in the bottom right of the combined picture on top. I have 2 versions (as with many of my designs), one horizontal (as shown here) and one vertical. I added both below and to my 24 card designs page. Enjoy!

Silk weaving again

I like to weave in silk, but I also feel limited with the colours I have (since it does cost a bit more). Well, I am slowly advancing on this one. A lot of see creatures and some horses.

It looks better in real life, since the yellow looks really golden, but on the photo it is somehow “flat”. I will add some of the new designs to the design page (and below).

After this one, I plan to take a summer brake. C U in September.

Silk, silk, silk

I just finished a new belt, woven in Sulawesi (as usual), but in 100% silk. The photos doesn’t give justice to the subtile shiny surface and the very soft feeling, but the feel of it is nice. I am a big fan of wool, but occasionally, silk is great too.

I have used 32 motif cards +6 border cards. Some of the designs are uploaded in my designs page and I plan to add some more, since I have tested some new variants and also how doubling up on some 16-card motivs can look like.

Kalle the Cat agreed to do some modeling…

I cannot stop weaving my beloved “creatures in squares” whenever I have a 32 card weave on the loom. To the left, octopus and swan and to the right a collection of dogs.

Various pictures of the belt. The light makes a big difference on the colors though.

I will upload some new designs on my designs page, or you can download them directly below.

Silk weaving again

I have been lazy on the weaving during the summer, but now I feel inspired again. I have started a weave with silk. Well, the yellow is technically a mix of wool and silk, but still, the green and red are pure silk. Current weave: 32 motif cards + 6 border cards. I plan to maybe try some combinations of different 16 cards motifs (since 16 +16 =32). Lets see how it turns out. A first glance below.

warping and threading…

Weaving…

The Silk weave is off the loom

I finished this belt quite fast. I really like to weave in silk, since it is very smooth. However, on the down side, the threads are brittle and wear easily during weaving. Well, here it is.

I thought of this “horses” pattern (to the left) while weaving, and I really like how it turned out. I also tried some new “creatures in squares” for 24 cards.

The silk yarn and some details.

The other design elements are mostly my own. Some I have tried before and some not, but I have lost track. I have hundreds of designs and sketches in my folders and I never took note of what I tried or not. If you would like the turning pattern of anything not on the design page, please contact me (the contact page is not always working though, please use the e-mail adress).

More silk weaving

I warped up this band in silk, and I just love the soft feel of it when weaving. So a sneak preview…

The yarn…

and the weave…

I also have a new page with a gallery of some of my work, here.

A new Sulawesi belt is off the loom.

I have finally finalised the Sulawesi belt in 100% pure silk (24 design tablets) and I am quite happy with the result. It does not show up in the photo, but the red is quite shiny and the belt is really soft.

I tried several new motifs/designs on this belt, mostly with flowers or leaves on “wine” like branches. I added the turning pattern below for the last design with drop-like flowers (Snödroppar in Swedish). Please check my other pages here for instructions on how to thread and read the pattern.

A few months ago I was only drawing animals, like horses and dogs, in squares or free. Then I had a bird period and now I seem to have entered the leaf and branches era. I dont know yet what the next phase or project will be. If you stay tuned you may find out. I do promise to upload some more designs. Please feel free to ask me if you are interested in a particular one.

Flowers on a string…

If you have checked out my page on how to draw your own designs, you can read and understand the below scheme.

I drew this design only last week, and I really like how it turned out.

I plan to uploading some more designs next to the result. It really gives a good illustration on how some simple lines on a piece of paper can turn into hanging fruits or flowers.

I feel quite inspired, so I decided to put up another one as well. Here we go. I am not sure what to call this one though. “Futuristic fruit” maybe.

Well, well, enough for today. Good night from Saga.
