A blog about tablet weaving and how to design your own belts.

Some more new designs.

I finally finished this piece. I was happy to try a lot of new designs, but I am not happy with the result. It is too crowded, I have a hard time to leave enough space between designs. I will try to do better next time. Anyway, some pictures below.

Some new “creatures in squares” designs for 24 cards

I have been drawing on some variations of creatures in squares for 24 cards (instead of 32). I am now test weaving, and I quite like how it turns out. It is not finished, but a sneak preview:

Turning schemas will be added to the designs section soon.

I also did some sewing using again my coat pattern from 1975, which I really love.

Have a great Christmas and see you again next year!

A mistake, which turned out surprisingly nice.

I had an idea for this belt, but I missed something and it turned out different than I expected. But in the end I think I like the result more than if I had succeeded. If you put it in the sun, it really glows.

I have developed several variations on diagonal patterns, both for 12 and 16 motif cards. These are in 16 motif cards. I will upload some on the design page soon.

Trying out some new designs with only 12 motif cards.

As you may know, I mainly draw my designs for 16, 24 or 32 cards. However, I have been tempted to weave something smaller, with simpler motifs. I also like the classical designs found in Hallstatt, and I wanted to do something similar. So, I drafted some new designs for 12 motif cards (+4 border cards), and below are some of them.

I plan to upload some of these designs on my design page in the near future. Stay tuned…

These are the classical tablet woven bands found in Hallstatt.

Another photo of my belt and an separate shorter piece (on top), to be used for decoration of a bag (or something similar).

Silk, silk, silk

I just finished a new belt, woven in Sulawesi (as usual), but in 100% silk. The photos doesn’t give justice to the subtile shiny surface and the very soft feeling, but the feel of it is nice. I am a big fan of wool, but occasionally, silk is great too.

I have used 32 motif cards +6 border cards. Some of the designs are uploaded in my designs page and I plan to add some more, since I have tested some new variants and also how doubling up on some 16-card motivs can look like.

Kalle the Cat agreed to do some modeling…

I cannot stop weaving my beloved “creatures in squares” whenever I have a 32 card weave on the loom. To the left, octopus and swan and to the right a collection of dogs.

Various pictures of the belt. The light makes a big difference on the colors though.

I will upload some new designs on my designs page, or you can download them directly below.

A new weave and a new jacket…

I have finished yet another jacket (the 5th in 4 months) and a new Sulawesi weave, which I aim to make another bag out of.

I will start with the Sulawesi belt. It is in wool, 24+6 tablets. My own designs , as usual.

I modified my elk design and I belive they look better now. Turning diagram below and on the design page. I also included the horses.

So, saving it for for last, here is the jacket. It is in 100% linnen, both inside and outside. I am quite happy with how it turned out.

Finished for today. I will be back soon, maybe with the bag I plan to make with the wowen strap.

Sewing myself a vintage coat.

I have taken a small brake from tablet weaving to sew myself a vintage coat. I found this pattern and I fell in love with this design from 1949.

I also have a stash of wool fabric that I bought for some medieval sewing project, that did not happen. I have been wanting to use up some of it and I realised that I had enough of this green quite thick wool fabric (since at least 5 years) and some black velvet (dating 20 years back…). I found some cheap sewing supplies in a second hand shop (the shoulder pads, thread and facing) which meant that the only new stuff I had to buy were the lining material, the pattern and the buttons (I keep searching on second hand for 4 nice buttons).

I am really happy with how it turned out. I only regret not finishing it earlier, since winter is nearly over in Switzerland. Also, I still have to add buttons (and the dreadded button-holes) to finish it off.

The pattern, originally from 1949

Me in my coat. I am already planning for a new spring jacket in 1970’s style.

Regarding learnings from this project, I have to mention a few points:

  • Sew the coat and the lining in parallel, to make sure they are exactly the same size in the neck, shoulder and back seams.
  • Make a first draft in cheap cotton (of the upper body at least). It made me realise I should add a few cm on the lenght of the upper body part and the sleeves.
  • Have the dicipline to stop when you are tired and continue the next day.

Changing background.

I loved this color combination of blue, red and yellow in Mora garn (a swedish, quite thin, weaving wool yarn). However, when I started weaving I was a bit disapointed how it turned out. The blue and red transformed to purple when viewing it from a distance. So I decided to inverse the motiv color and the background color (by weaving 2 more picks forward (4 forward), so the starting position was B and C upp, instead of down. Then I changed back after each design element. Have a look below.

The Mora Yarn.
The finished belt

I also tried some floats in the center of a flower pattern (to the right on the 1st picture). I also did the original for comparasion (left on the 1st picture). Turning diagram in the design section.

Below are some of the designs, and I am super happy with the kangaroo! Turning diagram can be found in the design section.

Some other animals – reindeers, horses and an octopuss.

I am quite fond of the reversed colors with the blue as design color:

Blue and purple

I really like the combination of blue and purple, but I feel that it is too “girly” somehow. Now I have finished a belt in blue and a quite pinkish purple. I do love these colors, but I still feel that I should weave with more grown up colors next time.

Well, here is my girly Sulawesi band, in wool from Weavers Bazzar, threaded with 3 strands per card (one empty hole per card, omitting the background color).

I took the chance to try some horse patterns and some lizzard and dragon patterns. I will add them to the designs page.

The threading diagram below:
